Light, observed and formalized. An identity system grounded in the material and atmospheric conditions of Copenhagen’s urban landscape.
The Challenge: This project explored how a future identity system for the 2023 Copenhagen Light Festival could capture the interplay of light, reflection, and atmosphere that defines the festival experience.
Methods: The identity system was informed by a combination of contextual research, in-person observation, and iterative design development. I explored Copenhagen directly, documenting existing light installations and studying how light interacts with the city’s waterfront, architecture, and public spaces. I also reviewed past festival materials to understand the event’s visual evolution and key patterns of expression.
The Outcome: The result is a future-facing identity proposal that presents the Copenhagen Light Festival as both celebratory and contemplative. Applied across posters, billboards, web, and merchandise, the system creates a cohesive visual expression that captures both the spectacle of light and the quieter sense of reflection, pause, and connection that the festival can evoke.
